Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman is his son-in-law who is the former leader of the cartel and once considered Mexico’s most-wanted man. He married Blanca Estela Aispuro. However, the exact marriage date is not shared with the public. He has two children with Blanca, Ines Omar Coronel Aispuro, and Emma Coronel Aispuro. His daughter is an American former teenage beauty queen. Emma was also arrested in February 2021 in the United States on charges of conspiracy to unlawfully import and distribute illegal drugs, money laundering, and many other charges. She was even sentenced to three years in prison in November 2021.
Career
Talking about his career, Ines Coronel was officially a cattle rancher in the rural community of La Angostura, Canelas, Durango. According to his neighbors, cattle rancher was his show profession, he reportedly cultivated marijuana and opium poppies. On 9 January 2013, he was sanctioned by the United States Department of the Treasury under the Foreign Narcotics Kingpin Designation Act, for being involved with the Sinaloa Cartel’s illicit activities and coordinating drug trafficking operations for Guzman. It also sanctioned another Sinaloa Cartel Chief Damaso Lopez Nunez, who worked directly with Guzman. Coronel’s assets were frozen and ordered the people of the U.S. to not do any business with him.
His main area of work was in Durango and Sonora, primarily in the municipalities of Agua Prieta, San Luis Rio Colorado, and Cananea, where he cultivated marijuana and coordinated drug trafficking shipments through the U.S.-Mexico border in Arizona.
On 30 April 2013, Coronel was arrested by the Mexican Federal Police, along with his son Ines Omar, and three other people at a warehouse in Agua Prieta, Sonora without firing a single shot. They seized four automatic rifles, a handgun, and at least 550 pounds of cannabis from the spot. He was taken to a prison in Sinaloa, in December 2013.
Conviction
A federal judge in Sonora found Ines Coronel Barreras guilty of marijuana trafficking and for having military-exclusive firearms. Coronel was sentenced to 10 years, 5 months, and 9 days in prison, and told to forfeit $MXN 15,930. The sentence also extended to his son, Ines Omar, who was also convicted of the same and given 10 years, 3 months, and a fine of $MXN 15,542.
